What are best friends for?

Sixteen year old Cara Lange has been a loner ever since she moved away from her best and only friend, Zoe, years ago. She eats lunch with the other girls from the track team and tries to avoid the popular girls who, after an embarrassing incident in the cafeteria, endlessly torture her, calling her Choker. But mostly she spends her time watching Ethan Gray from a distance, wishing he would finally notice her.

Then one day Cara comes home to find Zoe waiting for her. Zoe’s on the run from problems at home, and Cara agrees to help her hide. With her best friend back, Cara’s life changes overnight. Zoe gives her a new look and new confidence, and the next thing she knows, she’s getting invited to parties and flirting with Ethan. Best of all, she can talk about everything with her BFF.

But just as quickly as Cara’s life came together, it starts to unravel. A girl goes missing in her town, and everyone is a suspect – including Ethan. Worse still, Zoe starts behaving strangely, and Cara begins to wonder what exactly her friend does all day while Cara’s at school. You’re supposed to trust your best friend no matter what… but what if she turns into a total stranger.

I love how they used a rose to make the word choker. Simple cover, love the colors. Everything goes together so well.
But Zoe continued holding out the pill. "Come on. Don't be a baby." She edged closer to Cara. Their faces were almost touching.

"I'm not," Cara said weakly.

"Then take it."
Cara is like an outcast in her school. Her track team acknowledges her existence but doesn’t really take the time to talk with her. Her parents are also distant and come home only for a little bit, since they are both lawyers and working really hard on cases. Cara is alone in her world.

When Cara chokes on a carrot, Ethan saves her life. Ethan’s girlfriend, Alexis, is jealous and thinks Cara just wants the attention. That’s kind of a mean thing to say, since you know she could have died. Alexis and her best friend begin to make choking noises and start calling her Choker.  Cara’s eye does this weird twitching thing and they laugh at her more. She goes home and finds her best friend from childhood is there.

Zoe lets Cara discuss everything that has happened to her. What makes matters worse, Alexis and Sydney are next door making from of her again. Zoe comforts Cara. As they go bed, Cara plays with Zoe’s hair until they both fall asleep. During the night, an ambulance’s lights wake up Cara. Sydney is found died in the swimming pool. No one knows what happened but they think she got drunk and fell into the pool. This is just the first accident.

After Cara does well on a track meet, she gets invited to a party. At the party, she flirts with Ethan and Alexis comes in. She yells at Cara that Sydney would not want her there. After that, Ethan walks Cara home. The next day, everyone finds out that Alexis went missing. The cops suspect that Ethan had something to do with it.

Cara thinks Zoe had something to do with it. Not just Alexis’s disappearance, but with Sydney’s death too.

Ethan was by far my favorite character. He never made fun of Cara and he seemed like a really nice guy. Great character. As for my least favorites, that would be Alexis and Sydney. I know there wouldn't be conflict without them but why would you make fun of someone who is choking. That just seems cruel.

As the story plays out, you think you know what happened but then Woods throws you into a different direction. She does great job at telling this story and the ending was unexpected. If you want a great mystery story on your shelf, you should give this book a try.
There is nothing to report at the moment but we will let you know. I think Elizabeth Woods is great writer so hopefully she will bring another book.
